Royal Rhinos and New Seasonal Hiscores

We’ve teamed up with the charity United for Wildlife on their United for Rhino campaign to help them raise awareness of illegal wildlife trade, in particular rhino horn trade.

Today, RuneScape members can begin the journey to adopting a white or black royal rhino pet in-game.

All you need to do is visit the young conservationists who are waiting for you in Burthorpe to tell you all about the plight of the rhinos - particularly the dangers they face from poachers in the wild.

The conservationists, Trang and Mauricio, will be there for 2 weeks and will provide you with a different multiple choice question, related to the plight of the rhinos and illegal wildlife trade, each day.

To adopt a white royal rhino, all you need to do is answer 3 questions correctly over the 14 day period, and to adopt your black Royal Rhino you need to answer 7 questions correctly.

The royal rhinos in your care are extra special. To thank you for saving them, they are offering an XP buff, 5% if you have the white rhino and 10% for the black rhino.

On top of this, those of you with 96 Summoning can use your white rhino like a pack yak, giving you access to a Pack Yak inventory for 1.5 hours in exchange for a pack yak pouch. Your black rhino offers the same for two hours.

These extras will last for the two weeks that our young conservationists are in game and for two weeks after they have moved on to other lands. After this, your rhinos will still be with you, just minus those special extras.

For more information on the plight of the rhino, visit the United for Wildlife website.

The Game Filter is Here!

This week Old School sees the release of the highly anticipated game filter as well as a much needed update to the skill guides and a small tweak to the stamina potion.

Game filter

Some activities in Old School can leave your chat box looking a little like this

]Well, thanks to Mod Reach working through roughly 5,000 lines of code we now have the game filter! This cleans up the messages that pop up in your chat box by hiding some of the less informative, more repetitive messages. To enable the filter, simply right click the Game button beneath the chatbox and select Filter.

With the game filter enabled the chat box shown above looks like this

Skill guide refresh

Last week Mod John C posted a thread on the forums asking players to help find any missing information from the skill guides and level-up messages in Old School. The community pulled through and John has worked through all of the skill guides updating them with the missing content that players submitted.

You will now be able to find a lot more information in the skill guides as well as some improved level-up messages.

Stamina potion tweaks

After releasing stamina potions a few players pointed out that they look a little too similar to zamorak brews. To make sure people know exactly which potions they have the colour of the stamina potions has been altered.

Legacy Mode – Launching Monday 14th July

Following your great feedback and many weeks of updates to the Legacy Mode beta, and the recent poll in which over 80% of you overwhelmingly voted for the introduction of Legacy Mode; we are now ready to release.

Legacy Mode is a way of playing the modern RuneScape game with a traditional look and feel, without the need to learn the new combat system.

Our aim was to give players the freedom to choose how they play - we want players to use Evolution of Combat because they want to, not because they have to – that’s why Legacy is an optional mode that you can switch on or off, allowing you to choose if and when you use it.

Legacy mode includes:
  • Traditional RuneScape combat, with no abilities.
  • Interfaces styled from the pre-RS3 - both resizable and fixed.
  • Old-style minimap icons.
  • Life points back to a max of 990.
  • Old-style combat animations and stances
Global Updates to Combat

Independent of Legacy Mode, we will also be introducing the following global changes to combat to make improvements for everyone, especially in PvP:
  • Voted for back in February by you; we will be reinstating the '138' combat formula, tweaked to give melee, ranged and magic equal contribution.
  • Special attacks on weapons that had them previously.
  • Critical hit chance will be replaced by strength bonuses which give higher max hits.
Future Combat

Our aspiration for Legacy Mode was to allow players the choice of combat system whilst not alienating one system against the other. Watching so many of you enjoying both modes makes us confident that we have cracked it. Both Legacy and EOC will become optional modes that can be switched on or off, so you can choose which mode you want to use and when.

Our commitment to making combat great again doesn’t stop with the launch of Legacy Mode. Later this month we will be launching our most ambitious boss encounter ever with the introduction of Araxxor’s Lair which we know will quickly become a fan favourite.

On top of that we will be looking to make even more improvements to both EOC and Legacy in the future.

For a detailed breakdown of all of the fixes we have made since Beta, and the features we’ll look to add in the future check out the Legacy Mode Beta Forums.

We look forward to seeing you and your friends all on Monday!

Legacy Mode Launch, Global Combat Improvements And Gear Guide

0
0
At the beginning of the year we started the Power to the Players initiative, and in the last six months the RuneScape community has used it to shape the game in over 50 polls.

Today brings the biggest player-driven releases so far: the launch of Legacy Mode and return of the 138 combat formula.

This year, we vowed to work with the community on making Evolution of Combat the best it can be, as well as finding an alternative for players who preferred things as they used to be. Our aim has been to allow all types of players to enjoy combat their way, and to have them able to play side-by-side.

Read on to find out the details of Legacy Mode and the many other combat improvements - available in-game now.
Legacy Mode

Legacy Mode is an optional setting which allows you to play the modern game, but with traditional interfaces and old-style combat, without the need to learn the new Evolution of Combat system.

Legacy Mode can be turned on or off in either the Game Settings or Powers - Combat Settings interfaces, and when activated enables the following features:
  • No abilities, with auto-attack damage scaled up
  • Pre-RuneScape 3-style interfaces, both resizable and fixed
  • Old-style combat animations and stances
  • Old-style minimap icons
  • Health and damage visually scaled down (e.g. 9900 life points in EoC becomes 990 in Legacy)
Global Combat Improvements

For those of you who enjoy Evolution of Combat, we’ve also made significant improvements to the system, based on your feedback. We've fine-tuned these on the beta servers in recent months.
  • The 138 combat formula has been reinstated, tweaked to have equal contribution from melee, ranged and magic
  • Special attacks on weapons have returned. In EoC mode you can find the 'Weapon Special Attack' ability in the Defensive Abilities menu
  • Strength bonuses have replaced critical hit chance
  • Ability damage has been fine-tuned to address some long-term imbalances. Damage output potential remains the same, but weaker abilities have been improved and overpowered abilities toned down
  • More life points come from stats than from armour, and combat triangle penalties and bonuses are slightly relaxed
  • The Loadout interface has been updated to give clearer info for offensive and defensive stats
  • Some bosses - such as the God Wars Dungeon generals - have had their difficulty slightly increased
Today’s update also brings a few Legacy-only and EoC-only game worlds. While the systems have been designed to be played side-by-side, we appreciate that PKers will want to know which mode their opponents will be using.
Fancy seeing this for yourself? Tune into our Twitch channel at 6pm BST today for our special Legacy Live Stream to spend 4 hours getting the lowdown with Mod Pips, Mod Pi, and Mod Slayer.
Future Combat

Today’s launch of Legacy Mode and the Global Combat Improvements are a landmark point in our quest to make RuneScape’s combat the best it can be – but our ambitions don’t end here.

In the short term, we’ll continue to tune both EoC and Legacy in response to your feedback, and we will also soon be offering limited stat rollbacks for those who used to have pure accounts but lost these in the change to EoC or re-introduction of the 138 combat formula.

In the longer term, we want to do more to revive PvP minigames and the Wilderness; to bring back monster aggression; to rework equipment that has lost its relevance; and to offer options to have Legacy Combat within the New Interface System, and vice versa.

To keep up with our progress on any outstanding issues, visit our 'Known and Fixed Issues' thread.
Please always give us your feedback, both what you’re enjoying and what you’d like to see changed. We’ll do our best to make it happen.
Gear Guide

Having the right weapons and items can help you take your adventure in Gielinor even further and that’s why we created our brand-new Gear Guide.

Use it to find out the very best weapons, accessories, and armour available to your character; simply select a combat method and a skill level to populate a list of all the best gear!

Bounty Hunter

Last week's Bounty Hunter developer blog gave us a great amount of insight into what it is that you want from Bounty Hunter and the feedback gave us a good idea of how we should be implementing it.

This is a run-down of how we see Bounty Hunter fitting into Old School after hearing what you had to say.

Here are a few of the main points we picked up on.

  • A reasonably overwhelming majority feel that the mechanics of BH being implemented into existing PvP areas in some way would be more suited to Old School rather than an entirely separate minigame or worlds
  • Players would like to see mechanics available in the existing wilderness on set worlds
  • Players like the idea of a minimum risk in order to take part

Implementation
4 worlds would have Bounty Hunter mechanics added to the wilderness, 3 being members and 1 being Free to Play. This leaves the existing PvP environments as they are while allowing people to come to the Bounty Hunter worlds for some slightly different gameplay.

Taking part in the Bounty Hunter activity is optional, however the wilderness on Bounty Hunter worlds will have some restrictions such as a minimum risk to be able to enter the wilderness.

Being assigned a target
In order to be assigned a target a player must be in the wilderness for at least 10 minutes.

Entering the wilderness
In order to make sure that the players being hunted are nice and rewarding players will have to risk at least 50k in alch value in order to enter the wilderness on a Bounty Hunter world.

Killing your target
Once you have been assigned a player to take out you will see an arrow on the minimap pointing to their location for as long as they are in the wilderness. In addition to this Bounty Hunters will be able to see a coloured skull above their target's head that gives an idea of how much they are risking.

Anyone willing to take on the challenge of hunting a player down will have access to the spell Teleport to Target which will teleport them directly to the player they are tasked to kill. This would be a great way to surprise your target and catch them off-guard.

For every target that you kill you will receive an added point to your Bounty Hunter Rating. In the future we hope to release a Bounty Hunter Rating section to the Old School hiscores, however this will not be possible alongside the initial release of Bounty Hunter.

You Decide
The poll tomorrow will include a number of questions about Bounty Hunter so it is, as usual, up to you to decide whether or not Bounty Hunter is something you wish to see in game.

Many players have been wondering about what exactly is planned for the new skill. Well, Mod Mat K has written up an incredibly in-depth developer blog going into detail on Artisan to try and answer any questions you may have been having.

As always, we are still looking for as much feedback from you as we can possibly get. Make sure to head over to the Artisan developer blog, give it a read and let us know what you think!

Artisan

Introduction
Thanks for all the feedback from the last developer blog about the artisan skill. We wanted to put out another developer blog to go into a bit more detail about what you could make using the artisan skill. As we mentioned in the last develop blog, we will go into more detail about the balancing at a later stage, but we will ensure that we don’t devalue the effort players have put in to getting their skills where they are and to maintain the ethos that those who put the hard work in will get the benefit of higher skill levels.

One of the key things from the last round of feedback was the impact artisan has on combat. So, we have removed all the combat benefits from artisan and made it truly a skiller’s skill. The only impact artisan has on combat is the ability to create magic robes. These robes fill the gaps which where there are no magic robes and do not devalue any other existing content.

The important thing to remember is that nothing here is cast in stone, should this pass a poll we will still need a huge amount of feedback from you during the development process. The whole point in what we are trying to do is to make the skill what you want it to be.

Artisan in short
We know it is a long dev blog, so for those who just want a quick recap, here it is.

Artisan is very similar to slayer, but for skilling rather than fighting. You will visit an artisan master who will give you an assignment to gather a resource. Once you have gathered the resource he will ask you to craft it into an item. This will award you with XP in the artisan skill, the gathering skill you used to get the resource and the skill you used to craft the item. The items you can make are unique to artisan and will give you help and new ways to level your existing skills.

As your artisan level increases you will have access to make more and more useful items such as elemental runes, two handed crossbows, food with poison healing properties, wieldable harpoons and totems to buff your existing skills amongst many other things. You will also gain access to brand new resources and areas as your artisan level increases.

Read on if you want to know more.

Gathering resources
To level your artisan skill you still need to visit an artisan master and get assignments from them. Your artisan master will first give you an assignment to gather some resources. What the artisan master will ask you to collect will depend on your levels and the level of artisan master you are talking too. Here is our initial thoughts on what he could ask you to collect.

As you can see from the table above there are some new resources you can gather, quartz, ash logs, elm logs, redwood logs and great kyatt fur. Here is a breakdown of how we see them fitting into each skill.

Each artisan master will grant you access to a new resource area which contains the new resources plus a selection of other resources which you will find useful. You will be able to access this area whether you have an artisan task or not. These will include new forests, mining sites and hunting areas.

Once you have gathered the items your artisan master has asked for you should head back to talk to him and he will give you some artisan XP based on the XP you earnt gathering the resources.

Using your resources
Once you have collected your resources and have received your artisan XP you will have the option of asking the artisan for another gathering assignment or a crafting assignment. If you choose another gathering assignment, your slayer master will give you one and you can keep the resources you have already gathered.

If you ask for a crafting assignment your artisan master will ask you to use the resources you have gathered to make an item. The items you will be asked to make will be brand new items specific to the artisan skill. You will use only the item from your gathering task and another skill to make this item, you will receive XP in both artisan and the other skill you have used.

For example, you gathering task may be to collect 160 pure essence. If you ask for a crafting assignment you might be asked to create elemental runes (runes which act as all of the elements), you will receive runecrafting XP when crafting the runes and artisan XP when that task has been completed. When you next speak to your artisan master, he will give you another gathering task.

In order to craft anything in a crafting assignment, you will need to use an artisan’s workshop. Each artisan will give you access to their workshop if you have the right artisan level. Alternatively if you have the right construction level, you can build your own in your POH. The majority of the items you can make for artisan will only be able to be made while you have an assignment to make it, however they will be tradable.

Artisan points
Each time you complete a gathering assignment and the corresponding crafting assignment you will receive some artisan points. These points can be used to block specific tasks or tasks related to specific skills. A number of you have asked to be able to access the skill blocking function quickly. To accommodate this, you will be able to block one skill for free until you reach level 10 artisan. Once you have some points you can choose what to spend your points on. Here’s a list of what you could spend your points.

  • Block tasks for a specific skill for the next 10 levels. (A maximum of three skills can be blocked in total)
  • Block tasks for a specific skill until you unblock them. (A maximum of three skills can be blocked in total)
  • Unblock a specific skill.
  • Block a specific task. (up to a maximum of 5 tasks blocked)
  • Unblock a specific task
  • Be able to increase the amount of items you need to collect or craft in an assignment.
  • Ability to unlock specific non artisan crafting tasks such as unstrung long bows.

What you can make using artisan
Below you will find a list of the different items you can make using your artisan skill. The titles reflect what skills the items are helpful for. All the items you can make are designed to give you either an alternative way to level a skill, useful items for levelling a skill or other benefits. The rewards are also designed not to devalue any existing item or way of skilling and stays true to the ethos of rewarding those who put the effort in.

Fish Fillets (fishing, cooking and herblore)
Once you have collected your fish, your artisan master may ask you to produce fish fillets. As you fillet the fish you will receive artisan XP.

If you have the required artisan level fish fillets can be cooked at any time to create filleted food which restores the same health as its non-filleted version. For example, both a cooked shark and a cooked shark fillet will heal 20 hitpoints. However, before cooking the fish fillets you can add herbs to them which will give them an additional affect. For example, if you add a marrentill herb to a raw shark fillet and cook it, you would have a food item that heals 20 hitpoints and has a chance of healing you of poison. The important thing to note is that the each food item will only have a chance of applying its effect and the effects they do apply won’t be as good as the potion you can make with that herb. The act of adding herbs to a fillet of fish will give herblore XP.

Here is the effect each herb will generate.

Carvings (mining and crafting)
Using your crafting skill you can make carvings out of pieces of ore. When worn around your neck, these carvings give you a chance to receive an extra ore from the next 28 rocks that you mine of the type of carving you are wearing. Each time you craft a carving, you will get some crafting XP.

Artisan Tools (mining, smithing, woodcutting and fishing)
Artisan tools can only be made when you have the corresponding artisan assignment. The only exception to this is the artisan’s pickaxe and hatchet which can be made at any time after you reach level 85 artisan. These items are tradable and each time you make one you will receive both artisan and smithing XP.

Totems (woodcutting, crafting and firemaking)
You may receive an assignment from your artisan master to turn some logs you have collected into a totem. The type of log you use will affect how many logs you will need to create a totem. Once you have created the totem, you can burn it to temporarily receive the effect of the totem. Here is a list of the totems you will be able to make and the impact of them.

Two handed crossbows (fletching)
Another of the assignments you might receive from your artisan master is to turn the logs you have collected into 2 handed crossbow stocks. Once you have made these stocks, you can trade them to other players, or use them to create two handed crossbows. Two handed crossbows are slower to load than a normal crossbow and have a strength requirement to use, they do have a higher max hit than their one handed counterparts.

Slow burners (woodcutting, firemaking and herblore)
If your gathering assignment was to mine some coal, your next assignment may be to make some slow burning powder. You’ll be grinding up the coal into a fine powder which can then be used to turn logs into slow burners. The finer you grind the powder the higher level log you can use it on, however you will need more of it. When you set fire to a slow burner log it will burn for longer than its normal counterpart. As it is more difficult to set fire to a slow burning log, you get slightly more XP than you would for a burning a normal one.

Combining Runes (mining and runecrafting)
After you have collected pure essence, you can be asked to combine the essence into unique runes. This can be done by taking the pure essence to the artisan’s workshop and crafting the runes. You will get runecrafting XP for making the runes.

Construction shortcuts (woodcutting, mining and construction)
You can build your own houses and it if you can do that, it seems only sensible that you can build structures to help you climb over fences, under walls or cross rivers. When you have collected granite or some wood as a gathering assignment, you may be asked to make some items which are components needed to create the shortcuts. The shortcuts will degrade over time, however the higher your construction level the longer they will last.

Skilling bracelets (mining and crafting)
Artisan also brings you skilling bracelets. You will be able to craft lesser, major and superior bracelets for specific gathering skill which will help you when you are on an artisan task. These bracelets degrade over time and when you make them you will receive crafting XP.

Player owned housing (construction)
When you complete a craftable assignment from your artisan master you will use a workshop belonging to him. However, if you have the required levels you will also be able to build your own artisan workshop in your house. You can then use this to make items when you have a task. If you collect quartz as your gathering task, you may be asked to make figurines which when placed in your house will give you a chance to build an item without using the resources.

Clothing (farming and crafting)
If you are given a hunting gathering assignment you may well be asked to turn the items you collect into materials needed to make clothing. These items may include things such as different coloured rolls of fur, down or skins. In addition to the clothing we will be introducing the ability to grow cotton in your allotments giving you farming XP. You will be able to spin the cotton into cotton thread to gain some crafting XP. You will then be able to use a loom to turn your cotton thread into sheets of cotton. You will also be able to use the loom to turn balls of wool into sheets of wool and flax fibres (which you will be able to spin at a spinning wheel) into linen.

To make clothing you don’t need to have an assignment and can be made as long as you have the required artisan level.

Boss Pets And Spawn Rates

This week is an interesting one for 'scapers of all types with a big change to how spawns work along with some not-so-big boss monsters.

Boss monster pets

Have you ever been at God Wars, firing away at Kree'arra, and thought... "Boy, I sure would love to have this vicious beast follow me around all the time"?

Well, if you have it is your lucky day!    Posted Image

Boss monster pets are now available from the following boss monsters
  • K'ril Tsutsaroth
  • General Graardor
  • Kree'arra
  • Kraken
  • Zilyana
  • Giant mole
  • Dagannoth prime
  • Dagannoth rex
  • Dagannoth supreme
  • Thermonuclear smoke devil
  • King black dragon
  • Kalphite queen
    Posted Image

While these lovely little beasts are now available as loots from their larger counterparts you might not see too many around and about. These pets are incredibly rare drops so you'll have to spend a fair amount of time taking out your favourite bosses in order to get your tiny companion.

Try your luck and head over to a boss of your choice now, who knows... Maybe you'll be the first to get your hands on a cute little boss!

Standardised spawn rates

Spawn rates of pretty much everything in Old School will now be consistent throughout all worlds.

Prior to this update the time that resources and monsters would take to respawn would be based on how many people were online on that world. The more players that were online, the faster the resources or monsters would respawn.

This wasn't ideal and you agreed, so resources and monsters now spawn at a standardised rate throughout all worlds regardless of how many people are currently online.

The spawn rates of the Dagannoth Kings have not been changed in order to avoid impacting how players kill the bosses, and God Wars bosses have a set spawn rate of once every 90 seconds (a half way point between the previous slowest and fastest spawn rate) so that players are still able to kill the bosses at a reasonable rate whether they are solo or in teams.

In other news...
  • Elite anagram clue NPC's no longer ignore you if you haven't completed your challenge scroll.
  • Fixed the chathead when wearing a cat mask.
  • Fixed a typo on the Mos le'harmless teleport scroll.
  • Improved routefinding near the Yanille wall agility shortcut.
  • The barrelchest anchor is now listed in skill guides.
  • We've added lots more messages to the game filter based on your feedback including hunting chinchompas, smashing gargoyles and eating food.
  • Lumberyard teleport scrolls are now available as clue scroll rewards.
  • The graceful outfit has been graphically reworked.
  • Clue scrolls and caskets can no longer be picked up on F2P worlds.
  • You can no longer telegrab members objects in F2P worlds, however you can still telegrab untrimmed skill capes.

Boss Timer, Kill Counts And Legacy Mode Fixes

Boss Timer, Kill Counts and Legacy Mode Fixes<p>
Our deadly Ninja Team are hard at work on an awesome PvM update, where Death himself will offer Slayer-like tasks to take down some of Gielinor's toughest bosses.

This week we've introduced the first parts of this update. There's an in-game timer to show how quickly you prevail during instanced boss fights, and we're starting to track kill counts of relevant beasties, which will be viewable in an interface once the main update hits the game.

We've also released a batch of updates to Legacy Mode and the accompanying EoC improvements, in response to the feedback you've given us so far.
Read on for more information, or log into RuneScape now.

Boss Timers

Upon entering an instanced boss fight, you'll now see a new, movable boss timerelement in the interface. This will remain and keep counting up for as long as it takes the instanced boss to be defeated, and will announce the kill time in your chat box when it falls.

Note that the timer will not appear if more than a certain number of players are in the instance. This differs, depending on the boss:
  • Giant Mole - 1
  • TzTok-Jad - 1
  • Queen Black Dragon - 1
  • Zilyana - 1
  • Graardor - 1
  • Kree'arra - 1

  • Vorago - 7
Kill Counts

Today, we've also added kill tracking of bosses and certain slayer monsters - listed below. You won't be able to see how many you've defeated until the full update arrives, but you can start racking up kills.

Legacy Updates

Huge thanks to all of you who've given your feedback on last week's Legacy and EoC update.

We're overjoyed to see so many of you enjoying the return of traditional combat and the global combat improvements, but we're well aware that there's still work to be done.

All of your feedback has been read and taken into account. Last week, we fixed some of your most high-priority points - in particular, God Wars and Dagannoth Kings balance.

As part of our ongoing work on Legacy and EoC, today sees another batch of post-release fixes and tweaks, including the following:
  • Minimap icons are now correctly sized in EoC mode.
  • Combat challenges can now be blocked at 138 combat level.
  • Flurry no longer deals magic damage when Korasi's sword is equipped.
  • The amulet of glory has been rebalanced, so the amulet of fury is the better choice - as it should be.
  • A number of outdated references to combat levels and life point values have been corrected.
See the patch notes for full details of today's fixes, and visit this forum thread to follow our progress on known Legacy and EoC issues.

Remember that this is just one part of our ongoing work on Legacy and the updated EoC system. Keep giving us your feedback!

Enjoy!

The future's bright for RuneScape warriors, so gear up and get into the fray. As always, let us know what you think over on the forums.

Bonds and RuneFest

With the RuneFest announcement being made earlier today many of you will have noticed that you are able to buy your tickets, hotels, food, drink and souvenirs using bonds. Last year showed us that there are a huge amount of Old School players that love attending RuneFest and we thought it is only fair that we should start a discussion about whether you wanted to take advantage of this offer. The one thing to be clear about is that this is just a discussion and you won’t suddenly wake up one morning to see bonds appearing in Old School. If bonds are introduced they will be done on the communities terms and only after passing a poll.

The benefits of bonds have been well documented, they help in the battle against bots and real world trading, you can use them to buy membership (which is particularly useful when it comes to the F2P trial) as well being able to use them to pay for your RuneFest trip. The one thing you as a community need to be aware of is that at some point a player will have to buy that bond for real world money and will trade that bond for gold coins. That is the reality of the system and you can’t have one without another.

The movement of gold between RuneScape and Old School via the gold swapping clans is well established and has been facilitating the use of bonds in Old School for a long time now. Bringing bonds directly into Old School will remove the risk that gold swapping clans bring.

We know that some of you may see bonds as a prelude to other microtransactions like treasure hunter or Solomon’s store. Again, if this community wanted these we could do them, but we are pretty sure you don’t. If you want bonds in Old School only to be used for membership and RuneFest only then we can do that. If you don’t want bonds in Old School at all then you won’t see them.

This decision is for the community to make, and we think now is the right time to ask this question – how do you feel about bonds in Old School?

See the main RuneFest post here.

F2P Trial Expansion

July 17 2014

We all have the same aims for Old School, we want a vibrant and active community as well as a stable game to play. We both believe that F2P has a part to play in achieving this which is why we are opening the F2P trial to players who have not had membership for 90 days.

As we mentioned when we first spoke about this in the ‘Bots & F2P’ dev blog in May, our biggest risk with F2P are players unsubscribing and playing the F2P game. If the revenue generated by Old School starts to suffer because of this there is the possibility of support for it being allocated elsewhere which in turn will mean less updates. This is something that neither you nor we want. A successful game is something that both you and we want. This is why in May we opened F2P on a trial basis for new users.

When we launched the trial we were looking at two things, how will the bots behave and will the new accounts decide to go to F2P and either become members 2 weeks later than they would normally do or not subscribe at all.

Bots

When we released the F2P trial we did see a sudden glut of bots join all with the intention of farming yews and selling the proceeds. However, it seems they hadn’t read the dev blog properly as we mentioned we would disable yew trees for the trial. We saw a huge amount of accounts with level 40 woodcutting standing around scratching their heads just before we banned them.

The graph below shows the amount of unique bots in Old School. As you can see after an initial peak over the first couple of weeks, the bots in game have remained stable and at a very manageable amount.

Posted Image

This led us to the conclusion that F2P without the yew trees was not going to increase the bot population. With the added improvements in the bot hunting processes we have, we are seeing that 75% of gold farming accounts are banned within 48 hours of being created so bots are more under control now than ever.

New accounts

One of the things we wanted to answer with the F2P trial was how the subscribing behaviour would change for new accounts. When the F2P trial launched we immediately saw a reduction of about 30% in new accounts becoming members. However, this was more than made up by new accounts entering the trial and then becoming members leaving us with a net gain which has allowed Old School to grow in members every day since the trial came out. The trial has been a success in regards to extra members it has bought to the community. The F2P to P2P conversion rate we have seen is as good as Runescape has ever had in the last 5 years.

The average subscriber played Old School for around 23 hours before becoming a member and as you can see from the graph below 90% of players who subscribed, did so before the 11th day of the trial.

Posted Image

Due to the strong conversion rate and that most players are subbing well before the end of the trial, we have no plans to extend the trial for a longer period of time or offer a F2P version where you have access to it permanently. We think that giving permanent access to F2P will cause more members to unsubscribe without bringing any noticeable increase in new members which does help delivering what we are all aiming for; a vibrant and active community to support the stability of Old School. We know that for some of you the prospect of a permanent F2P system which is similar to how it was in 2007 is appealing and you will be disappointed that we are not heading in that direction. However, it is important to realise that the commercial environment has changed hugely in the last seven years and revenue streams such as adverts bring in a fraction of what they did back in the day.

The next steps

One thing that did surprise us with the trial is that there were a significant amount of players who created new accounts, played them for a bit and then subscribed an existing account. These are returning players who went to the trouble of making a free account and then realising that they were enjoying themselves and then making their main account a member again.

Clearly, the next step to take in this trial is to remove the barriers for returning players so they can access the trial on their main accounts. So, from the 24th July until the 28th of August, any account which has not been a member for 90 days will be able to access the F2P servers for 2 weeks. This will be in addition to the trial continuing to work for new accounts.

While this second part of the trial is ongoing, we will be analysing the results to see how things go. In a similar fashion to the new account trial, we will be monitoring how returning players subscribe and what changes this trial will have on them. Once we have the data we need from this trial, we can look at what the next step will be.

How you can help

With the trial opening up for returning members this gives a great opportunity to get in touch with past Old School players. We were told by a lot of you that some of your friends didn’t want to come back and start a new account and this is the ideal opportunity to let them know that now they can.

For all the clans out there, we will be allowing you to update your member lists in the clan cup if you want to invite some old clan mates to fight for you in the F2P clan cups. Let’s get some impressive turn outs which will help push clans forward and show everyone what excitement you can get.

We hope to see a lot of players take advantage of this opportunity and to help even more, we are leaving the summer special offer of 25% off 3 months of membership open until the 28th July. So, they can get a good deal on their membership too.

At the end of the day, the more success we have with the trials, the bigger and better the community will become. You will see more players, make more friends and enjoy Old School even more.

F2P Trial Expansion & More

July 24 2014

There are no shortage of updates this week with the release of changes to the F2P trial, boss kill counter, imbues for Treasonous & Tyrannical rings, master wand changes, Iban staff changes... The list goes on and on so let's get stuck in.

F2P Trial Expansion

The Old School F2P trial has been a great success in growing the community. In fact it has been that much of a success that we have opened it up so more accounts can access it. Accounts which have not had membership for 90 days and have not taken part in the Old School F2P trial will be able to access the F2P servers for two weeks until the 28th August. There is no better time to get hold of your friends and clan mates and get them back in to Old School!

To read more about the Free to Play trial or to discuss it with us, go here.

Boss kill counter

Many players spend time slaying monsters of the larger variety. Be it Graardor or Kree'arra, they step up to the challenge of taking on boss after boss. Players kills of the following bosses will now be tracked:

All GWD Bosses
All Wildy Bosses
All Dag Kings
Giant Mole
Chaos Elemental
KBD
Kalphite Queen
Barrows Chests

Posted Image

Your total kills are now displayed in a game message after each kill and to avoid spam this message is hidden by the game filter and you can access your boss kill log from a ring of wealth. With today's update every player's tracker will start at 0 and will count up every kill achieved from now on. No more arguing between your friends about who is the most talented PvMer, now you'll all have the numbers to back it up. Head over to your favourite boss and get going with cranking that number up!

Imbued Treasonous and Tyrannical rings

The Treasonous and Tyrannical rings are getting a bit of love this week with a new option available in Nightmare Zone to imbue them. It will cost 650,000 points to imbue each ring with the Treasonous ring (i) giving +8 stab attack and stab defence and the Tyrannical ring giving +8 crush attack and crush defence.

Master wand & Ancient Magicks

The master wand has now been given a useful upgrade that allows players to autocast spells from the Ancient Magicks spellbook. If you've ever wanted the extra magic bonus but just couldn't deal with the extra clicks, now is your chance. Grab yourself a master wand and have some fun.

Posted Image

Iban staff upgrade

The Dark Mage found in West Ardougne can now offer players a magical-wizardy upgrade to their Iban staff that will allow it to hold 2,500 charges. Each Iban Blast spell takes 1 charge against monsters, or 2 charges against players. However the Dark Mage is no fool and will demand 200k to complete the upgrade.

If you've ever wanted to get more out of your Iban staff now is your chance, hop on over to the Dark Mage in West Ardougne.

Clan Wars

Misclicking Clan Wars team members will no longer be an issue in Old School after a small tweak to how the attack options inside Clan Wars work. Members of your team no longer have Attack as their left-click option, as if you were all wearing the same team cape.

A Clan Wars minigame channel has also been added to the minigame channel list, so if you're a regular at Clan Wars make sure to hop in there to find some like-minded players.

In other news...
  • The Cave horror cave entrance now has a right click option to permanently disable the warning.
  • Vestment robe tops and legs now offer the same prayer bonuses as monk robes.
  • Castlewars supply tables now have a right click take-5 option.
  • Farmer payments are now listed in the farming skill guide.
  • All magic spells are now listed in the magic skill guide.
  • The Pheonix & Black Arm gang grouping chat channels have been replaced by a single chat called Shield of Arrav.
  • Further tweaks to the game filter.
  • Grace now wears the updated graceful outfit.
  • Fixed a transparency issue with a Varrock palace wall.
  • The Prospector hat chathead now animates correctly.
  • Fixed some clue scroll dialogue that referenced the wrong NPC.
  • Fixed an issue in the engine that allowed safespotting of some large monsters.
  • Repaired the floor in the basement of Varrock west bank.
  • Fixed a typo on the treasonous ring.

We have opened up a discussion on our forums about the Corporeal Beast.

The Corporeal Beast is a boss that many players have requested for quite some time and we now have the opportunity to introduce the monster into the game. We want to make sure that every aspect of the boss is how the players want it to be, so we need as much feedback as you can give.

Here is a sneak-peek of Corporeal Beast in Old School from the recent developer Q&A. Mod Reach and Mod Alfred attempted to take him on as a duo.

Araxxor, Twitch Integration and Lobby Update

Araxxor is here, and he can't wait to tear you limb from limb in a solo or duo boss battle to the death!

When we polled the sort of boss content you wanted earlier this year, the message was clear: there's nothing you like more than grappling with a beefy combat boss.

Araxxor won't disappoint, as you choose your route through his lair, dodge hazards, and finally face the beast himself - on your terms.

There are regularly shifting layouts to the lair, and loads of amazing rewards - including level 90 two-handed weapons and creepily cute spider pets.

We've also integrated Twitch streaming into RuneScape, and spruced up the lobby.

Read on to find out more, or log in now and head south-east of Port Phasmatys to the Araxyte Hive.

Getting Started

Get to Araxxor's home by heading south along the eastern coast of Morytania from Port Phasmatys.

Once you're there, enter the Araxyte Hive and you'll find a webbed-over entrance to the boss-fight area.

Click on it, and you'll have the option to enter a non-instanced version, or to create/join an instance.

You can also limit the instance to just one person, if you wish, or set a pass number to restrict access.
Note that only one person can enter the non-instanced version at a time, per world.

While there are no hard requirements to enter the lair (except any imposed when starting an instance) it's strongly recommended that you have at least level 90 in each of your combat stats, and the best gear that gold can buy.

The Fight

As you battle Araxxor, you'll need to lure him through various areas of the Araxyte Hive. There are several routes to choose from - of which only some will available, changing every few days - and Araxxor will have different abilities depending on which route you take.Posted Image
Araxxor's encounter is in your control - it's up to you how you choose to engage him. Moving through the paths and dealing with his mechanics will influence the difficulty and how the fight plays out. Experiment, and find your preferred spider-wrangling strategy.

There's no keeping a big spider down, either - each time you defeat Araxxor, he'll come back bigger, badder and angrier than before, for the rest of that day. As such, defeating him several times in succession will become gradually harder. The difficulty resets at 01:00 BST.

It'll also become significantly more difficult if you bring a friend - he'll be tougher, and his attacks will hit far harder. You'll need tight-knit teamwork to survive Araxxor's onslaught.

Rewards

First among the amazing rewards on offer are level 90 two-handed weapons for all three combat styles: the noxious scythe, noxious longbow and noxious staff. These monstrous tools of destruction are the finest of their kind and come with new special attacks - they look spectacular, too.

You'll put them together by combining a spider's leg, plus one of three arachnid body parts received as rare drops.

There's a terrifyingly cute spider pet too, also obtainable as a rare drop. Once you have it, you can unlock new versions the spider as well, by completing special achievements while fighting Araxxor solo. Click on the cocooned corpse outside Araxxor's lair to find out more.

Both of these are part of a lucrative drop table - designed to be more rewarding even than the QBD. Taking down Araxxor is no mean feat, but it's certainly worth your while.

Note that if you're fighting as a pair, you'll each get your own loot. There is no competition over drops.

Enjoy!

We can't wait to see you face Araxxor. To give you a chance to tackle him on your own, our wiki will include no detailed information on Araxxor's mechanics until the11th of August 2014.

Fight hard, and join the discussion on the forums.

Mod Chris L and the RuneScape Team
Twitch Integration

With the release of Araxxor, we've integrated Twitch streaming into the RuneScape interface. With a click of a button, you can now broadcast your RuneScape experience on Twitch.tv, with no need to run anything else in the background.

First, you'll need a Twitch account. Set one up - if you haven't already - and log into it via the Twitch tab in the Community interface.

Then enter a stream title, select your stream resolution and bandwidth cap, decide whether you want a microphone and/or webcam enabled and you're good to go.

The interface also allows you to quickly open the most popular RuneScape Twitch streams, and a new moveable window lets you chat with your own Twitch viewers while you stream.

Be careful not to push your streaming settings too high for your connection and computer to handle. Try lowering your graphics settings and resolution if you have trouble.
For help getting started, take a look at our video guide:

Start streaming now, and have fun!

Lobby Refresh

The RuneScape lobby has received a fresh lick of paint this week.

Firstly we've brought its visual style in line with the rest of the RuneScape website. It's bigger, clearer and more readable than ever before, with essential functions easily accessible. You can also nominate an additional favourite world.

On log-in, you'll land on a 'welcome' screen, where you'll be presented with the latest and greatest RuneScape content - handy if you've been away from the game for a time.

Let us know how you get on with the new, spruced up lobby system over on the forums.

Paying Farmers & Alchemy

This week we have several quality of life updates to help you out with your everyday 'scaping.

Right-click pay farmers

While the farmers at farming areas can be useful for chopping down your trees or protecting your crops they can often be a bit too talkative. In order to ease the process of paying farmers a right-click option to pay them has been added allowing you to skip any dialogue and get straight back to your farming run.

Alchemy warnings

Most of us have been victims of miss-clicking a precious item when casting an alchemy spell and having to watch it turn into a measly pile of coins. In order to prevent this type of mishap we have added a warning on items with a high alchemy value of 30,000 coins or more.

Posted Image

This warning can be turned on and off by right-clicking the alchemy spells in your spell book.

Posted Image

Equipment screen additions

The equipment screen received a few new stats to help you figure out exactly what it is your equipment is doing for you. The equipment screen will now include the following:
  • Ranged strength bonus
  • Magic damage multiplier
  • Undead-specific multiplier
  • Slayer-specific multiplier
Skilling Arena hunter changes

The Skilling Arena has now been prepared for the Hunter event next Saturday. Clans taking part will get to see the arena absolutely crammed with the explosive little creatures, it really is a skiller's dream.

In other news...

  • Taking 5 from Castle Wars tables will now fill any remaining inventory spaces if you have less than 5.
  • Audio for chopping trees is now played when woodcutting as a monkey.
  • The alchemy value of the books of war, darkness and law are now consistent with other prayer books.
  • Potions shared with Lunar spells now consume the potion much more reliably.

Behind the Scenes - August 2014

Our longest-running quest series concludes this month with Plague's End - a massive Grandmaster quest that's also the lead-up to the opening of Prifddinas - the Elf City - later this year.
There's also a month-load of clan updates and events, a boss-bashing Slayer update and a player-pitched overhaul to Barbarian Assault. It's looking like an awesome August for RuneScape!

Plague's End

There’s a massive milestone for questers this month as we bring you Plague's End: the exciting conclusion to RuneScape’s longest running quest series, which began with Plague City back in 2002.
It's a sprawling, two-hour+ Grandmaster quest that'll see you start a revolution, complete light puzzles, seek out the lost leaders of the fabled elf clans, and finally come face-to-face with the legendary Dark Lord himself.

Earn huge rewards like 800k XP over a range of skills and a special outfit to help you with all your Thieving needs.

This quest's also the prelude to the opening of the awe-inspiring Elf City when it starts to open next month - and you'll need to complete it if you want to get in.

Get working on the requirements, listed below. You definitely don't want to miss this epic quest.

  • 75 Construction
  • 75 Dungeoneering
  • 75 Herblore
  • 75 Mining
  • 75 Prayer

Clan Month

The elves aren’t the only ones to breathe life into their clans this month. You’ll also benefit from a batch of improvements to player-run clans, as discussed with you on the forums over the last year.
  • Reworked Clan Camp
  • New vexillum stands and teleport flag in Burthorpe
We're also bringing in a bunch of temporary benefits for the Clan Month:
  • XP return from skill plots in citadels increased to 140%
  • Increased XP buffs, heals and damage protection from your clan avatar
  • Increased bonus XP from your quartermaster and right-click fealty reward from your clan cloak
We're also making some more functional improvements to clan systems like links to the clan homepage on the vexillum interface - and more.

There are plenty of podcasts and competitions coming up too, as we get ready for the Clan Cup. Get practicing - registration will open mid-August, ready for the Clan Cup to start at the beginning of September!

There’s never been a better reason to start recruiting for your clan or join a clan if you’re not already in one. Perhaps you’ve got a citadel that you’ve been neglecting - go and give it some TLC!

Soul Reaper

The ninjas have been busy too, bringing you a Slayer update we're calling Soul Reaper.
You see, Death is getting a little frustrated with the amount of life these boss monsters have, so he wants you to kill them. All of them. Lots and lots of times.

As a reward for completing his special assignments, he’s happy to offer fat chunks of Slayer XP, plus access to a brand new gem - which can be crafted into some tasty, top-tier jewellery. These are far more powerful than the onyx gear you have available right now, although they still require onyx to craft.
You’ll also be able to earn larger bonuses to your health in PvM battles via the bonfires and get access to some new stats showing you your best times for killing each boss - plus a record of how many times you've killed them.

Barbarian Assault Rework

After an amazing pitch last year from PrimalMoose during RuneFest’s Dragons'-Den-style competition, we’ve taken Barbarian Assault and shoved it down the gullet of a Penance runner. It’s been slashed viciously by a Penance fighter, gnawed on by a healer, eyeballed by a spawn and revived by a Penance Queen - more deadly and rewarding than ever before.Posted Image
Take on the new hard mode to fight the Penance King, using all the teamwork you can muster! Experience a shiny new environment, improved Penance creature graphics, and updated rewards! Plus, dual-wield flamethrowers!

The whole minigame is really quite fantastic, and the feel and vibe of the original game is still there - just even more MEGA.

There are brand new rewards too but you’ll have to try it out to learn more about them.
With absolutely no level requirements, there's no excuse not to go try Barbarian Assault! Access to the minigame can be found by the Barbarian Assault course - just a click of a games necklace away.

In Other News

You’ll be able to find some brand new wings and tails to play about with in Solomon's Store this month, and we're releasing our 1000th music track: a real labour of love from our cracking Audio Team.
Hopefully you’ll be able to recognise some of our inspiration and even hear quite a few Jagex voices involved in the track. Don’t forget the awesome new emote for it too!
We've listened to your feedback and are making some tweaks to the world map icons - bringing them back in line with what you're used to.
Don’t forget that we're also releasing a huge number of dormant account names for you to use and making some significant changes to the Adventurer's Log - like being able to see your skill history.
Have fun!

Character Name Clean-Up – One-Day Countdown

0
0

As promised, here’s the latest information on the character name release. The first batch (A-C) of character names will be made available for name changes tomorrow!

So, at around 2pm BST on 5th August, all you’ll need to do is head straight into game to check if the name you’re after is available. If you’ve already changed your name in the last month, you can use a Bond to change it again.

Please note: this is the first time we’ve freed up so many character names and offered them for name changes, and demand is likely to be high. We’ll be carefully monitoring and maintaining the systems that manage the name-change service, but we ask for your patience and understanding, should the system run slowly or experience periods of downtime.

After listening to your feedback, we’ve decided to publish the list of character names 24 hours after the time listed above – so, around 2pm BST on Wednesday.

If you need a little inspiration, check the list out, but remember - the list will be accurate at the time of the release but will quickly be out of date as character names are taken. We cannot guarantee that a name appearing on the list will still be available.
